Linking Academic Freedom and Civic Space: African Perspectives

Can academic freedom be an entry point for wider engagement with civic space?

Academic freedom is the value most widely shared among universities. However, a key question for higher education is whether this principle can extend beyond campus to support civic space, including practical placements for human rights defenders at risk.

On 11 November 2026, the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York and the Africa Hub at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) are co-hosting an online panel discussion to explore these issues.

Bringing together researchers from the University of Ghana, Mzumbe University (Tanzania), Nebraska Wesleyan University, UWC, and the University of York, the session will discuss a new think piece and help shape its next stage.
